Overview

While clinically less severe than smallpox, monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus that transfers from animals to humans) (a virus that spreads from animals to people). It exhibits symptoms that are akin to those of smallpox. Monkeypox has supplanted smallpox as the most serious orthopoxvirus for public health since smallpox was eliminated in 1980 and smallpox immunizations were subsequently stopped. An infectious virus called monkeypox may affect both humans and some other animals. Fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that produces blisters before crusting over are all signs of monkeypox.
