Overview

From its humble beginning as a small commuter college with fewer students than the surrounding high schools, Norfolk's Old Dominion University has grown to be one of the premier institutions of higher learning in the state of Virginia. As the school sought to establish its independent identity, one iconic baseball coach and his star pupils helped bring national name recognition to ""Old Dominion College."" Monarchs tells the story of how Coach Bud Metheny built a baseball powerhouse out of almost exclusively local talent, culminating in a 1964 East Region NCAA championship earned in baseball's most revered venue--New York's Yankee Stadium.

Author Information

Jay Ingram grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He attended college at Old Dominion's former parent school, William & Mary, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in history. His interest in the subject matter of this book stems from the fact that his father, John A. Ingram Jr., was a student at Old Dominion College, and a member of the baseball team from 1961-1964. Jay is currently employed by an electric utility in Roanoke, Virginia, as a director of transmission field services.
