Overview

We begin our investigation from a realization that is simultaneously trivial and profoundly disturbing: we are, in our most fundamental constitution, clusters of molecules in motion. An ephemeral collection of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and other elements, complexly organized, which for a brief lapse of time acquires self-awareness, only to then disperse again into cosmic dust. This is our material condition, an irrefutable fact that modern science imposes upon us with disconcerting clarity. In the face of this reality, the question of the meaning of life takes on a dramatic urgency. If we are merely matter in transit, what distinguishes our existence from that of a rock or a star? What makes the interval between birth and death something more than a mere cosmic ""pastime,"" an arbitrary filling of time? Are we, as suggested by the question that inspires this work, merely an anonymous link in the infinite chain of human permanence on Earth, where the only thing that changes is the ""subject's ID number,"" a transient identity for the same repetitive process of being and ceasing to be?
