Overview

This book provides up-to-date information on the molecular diagnosis of viral diseases, including COVID–19, zika virus, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), viral hepatitis, meningitis, and human papilloma virus (HPV). It covers global trends, the impact of viruses on society, and the need for molecular diagnostics. Initial chapters include information on popular molecular diagnostic methods and up-to-date strategies like Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) and immunological methods, with an understanding of the challenges in their development. Further chapters emphasize emerging and next-generation diagnostic tools such as Specific High-sensitivity Enzymatic Reporter un-LOCKing (SHERLOCK), DNA Endonuclease Targeted CRISPR Trans Reporter (DETECTR), and Heating Unextracted Diagnostic Samples to Obliterate Nuclease (HUDSON), which boast a sensitivity of up to attomolar. The book also discusses high-end platforms like QIAsymphony. It is supplemented with illustrations and figures to aid conceptual understanding. The book is relevant for researchers in virology, clinicians involved in the therapy of viral diseases, and professionals in pathology labs interested in learning about advanced molecular diagnostic approaches for viral diseases.

Author Information

Aditya Arya, PhD is working as a scientist at the National Institute of Malaria Research, New Delhi, a flagship lab of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). By training, he is a biochemist with keen interest in redox biology and molecular diagnostics, with experience at some of the prestigious institutions such as Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, European Molecular Biology Laboratory, etc. He has published more than 40 research papers in peer-reviewed journals in the domain of medical biochemistry. Moreover, he is also a known author for various popular biology textbooks. For the last four years, his contribution in molecular diagnosis of viral diseases such as SARS-CoV-2 has been part of his scientific journey and recognized at the national level. Mairaj Ahmed Ansari, PhD is currently working as Assistant Professor at Department of Biotechnology, and Deputy Director, Centre for Virology at Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi. He has over two decades of research experience and published more than 35 peer-reviewed research articles in the area of vaccines, virology, and infection biology. He is also running a successful Master’s Degree in Medical Virology course at the University. In the past he has worked on development of vaccine candidates against intracellular pathogens like M. tuberculosis and L. monocytogenes. He also studied mechanism and signaling of innate immunity and its evasion, virus entry and DNA-Damage-Response (DDR), Virus-latency and -lytic cycle maintenance of herpesviruses. He is serving as editorial board member in Springer Nature Virology and various other journals. His eminent work on molecular and clinical virology and exploration of newer paradigms such as exosome-based diagnostics and biomarker discovery has been recent thrust areas.
