Overview

This book is about mathematics on the level for grade five. It is dedicated to a comprehensive coverage of the arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and exponentiation, including their properties as well as other fundamental concepts typically required for elementary arithmetic course of two-semester duration. The primary aim is to build a solid foundation on which 5th grade pupils can acquire the aptitude and preparation necessary to successfully continue the study of mathematics in upper classes. The book is similar in many respects to ""Modern Mathematics for Community Elementary Schools (Grade 5): Teacher's Edition"". However, unlike the Teacher's Edition, it doesn't contain solutions and answers to the problems and exercises found at the end of every chapter. Notwithstanding, it does contain ample example problems with answers and explanations. The textbook is recommended not only for 5th grade pupils and their teachers, but also for an adult literacy program in which basic mathematics concepts and skills set are taught. I hope that ""Modern Mathematics for Community Elementary Schools: (Grade 5)"" would be a contribution to the development and improvement of community primary school curriculum on elementary mathematics.

Author Information

J. Nyenetu Jarkloh was born in Liberia (West Africa) in Panwhan Town, located in the Municipal District of Sanquin, Sinoe County. As a child, he attended the local Panwhan Public School, where distinguished academic performance made him to be recognized by many as a child of intellectual promise, before going to Monrovia, the Liberian capital. In Monrovia, he attended the Amanda Caphart Elementary, Boatswain Junior High, Government Junior High, W. V. S. Tubman High, before enrolling at the University of Liberia (UL) in the College of Business. In the wake of Liberia's 1980 coup, based on excellent performance in his studies at the UL, Mr. Jarkloh was granted a bilateral scholarship to pursue advanced education in the former Soviet Union, where he completed advanced studies, earning a master's degree in radio engineering from the Odessa State Polytechnic University (Odessa, Ukraine). He returned to Liberia at the end of 1986. Upon return to his native country, Mr. Jarkloh had worked as a senior instructor in the Electronics Engineering Department at the W. V. S. Tubman Technical College (now Tubman Technical University) in Harper (Maryland County, Liberia), a part-time lecturer in mathematics (Numerical Analysis) at the University of Liberia, and also as Planning, Research & Development Manager of the Liberia Telecommunications Corporation (L.T.C.) (now Liberia Telecommunications Authority). He also holds a post-graduate professional certificates in telecommunications from the Satellite Transmission Systems Inc (Long Island, N.Y.), INTELSAT and the United States Telecommunications Training Institute (Washington, D. C., U.S.A). Mr. Jarkloh is fond of reading and writing and had widely published various articles and poems in many Liberian local dailies. Unfortunately, many of his unpublished manuscripts were lost as a result of fleeing from one place to another during the Liberia Civil War and eventual evacuation with his family to Ukraine, where he presently resides. However, he still has not given up his love for writing. In recent times, Mr. Jarkloh has written numerous articles and published five books on Amazon.com.
