Overview

Modern farms are pretty neat! They give us all enough to eat! This award-winning, nonfiction picture book introduces young children to farm life and is bound to spark conversations about where our food comes from. Rhyming verse and bright, attention-getting illustrations teach about the many different types of farms, from row crops to fruits and vegetables, to farm animals. Realistic farming images introduce readers to the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) that go into producing our food today. Jackie Nix, herself an agricultural scientist, uses her technical expertise and artistic skills to proudly tell the story of farm life today and specialized farming technology used to grow food for the entire world. Modern farms are as specialized and diverse as the many delicious foods they provide for us. Whether they are big or small, farms grow the food for one and all!

With growing advancements in technology and the increasing obsession with social media amongst kids, it's vital that we teach the next generation the fundamentals of farming and encourage those who show any interest in it. Modern Farms does that and much more. Author Jackie Nix writes in an easily accessible style that is bound to reach kids and teach them valuable lessons on how farming provides us with all the nourishment we need to survive and how modern farms function in general. The illustrations by Karen Light bring a bit of color to the proceedings and make the story all the more fun to read. Modern Farms is a delightful read meant to encourage future potential farmers to take up farming. - Pikasho Deka for Readers' Favorite ABSOLUTELY AMAZING I just read your book and it was absolutely amazing!!!!!! It's beautifully illustrated. More importantly, the message is MAGIC. I'd put this author up there with Andrea Beaty and Michael Hall. -Gein MORE THAN A CLASSIC FARM The rhyming and writing in the book are fun to read. Instead of doing a standard animals on a farm book, Jackie gives us some real insight into how farms work these days. She works in topics like milkers and combines while keeping the flow simple and fluid. She also goes back and forth show how different parts of a farm lead to different foods on our table, connecting the dots for us. Very cute experience! -Chris H. FARMING BASICS FOR KIDS This is such a great little book to prep students for farm trips or to talk about farms and how they affects us personally. I think this is a topic that is particularly important for those who don't have access or ability to visit a physical farm. The illustrations are fun, easy to navigate and the rhyming pattern keeps a light, happy pacing that will keep kids engaged during story time. - Corrine A.
