Table of ContentsReviews"This book covers the history of China during the 20th century, showing how China's isolation and internal power struggles left China behind in technology and world influence. Gives details about the rise of the Communist Party and the rule of Mao. From the takeover of Tibet to the Tiananmen Square protesters, major events are pictured. In general, this book has a negative tone about China and ends with questions about more problems rather than possible solutions. Recommended--Natalie Sunde, Librarian, Nimitz High School Irving Independent School District9/7/2008-- ""Irving Independent School District"" This is one in the series, ""China Focus"". Other 3 titles are reviewed this cycle as well. I found it interesting that the SLJ reviewer, who must be an expert on Chinese history, had much to say negatively about this series. I checked several of her points but disagree somewhat with her opinion on the title, Modern China: ""Especially vexing is the section on China 1900-1949, in which the author doesn't inform readers of the motives of the Boxers. . ."". I see what she means-there is not a detailed explanation of why the Boxers rebelled, but the inference is, ""In 1900, after the nation's defeat by the Japanese. . ."". I see much to be positive about in these volumes, and I think they would be a good addition to elementary or junior high shelf. Richly illustrated, including quality photos, and with visually attractive background on each page.
