What would you do if you knew monsters really did creep in the shadows? If people had powers or supernatural abilities too strange to believe. If you knew magic was real, would you attempt to tap into it, even though it was regarded with suspicion? Try to control it knowing that it could get you hurt, or worse? These are the same questions that Paxton McGregor asks himself everyday on his way to lessons. You would think classes would be a breeze for a sorcerer's apprentice like himself, but for some reason his magic skills just aren't clicking. Add a group of pretentious, popular teenagers, bullies with magic-hunting capabilities, and his strict father-who happens to be their teacher to the mix, and his social status isn't any better. That wouldn't be so bad, except it means that he is sent to stay with his classmate Maddison Martinez, an ""empathic"" girl out of his league. After hearing rumors about ""dead people walking"" and a strange explosion at an old cemetery, both of their fathers fall out of contact. Paxton and Maddison form a reluctant truce to search for them. Can they learn to trust and rely on each other to put together the strange clues they discover on their journey and find their missing parents? Perhaps even more important, can they learn to control their abilities and work together to prevent a hostile takeover that could change the world?
