Overview

"Where do the spies, diplomats, soldiers, and FBI agents go when their formal service ends? For most of us, full retirement is not an immediate reality. The decision to leave or retire from government is hard! Deciding what to do next is even harder. Author and Career Coach Alison P. Bouwmeester served for 28 years as a senior leader in the Central Intelligence Agency's Directorate of Operations. After retiring from the CIA, she spent nearly a decade as a senior business executive in the defense contracting industry, rising to Vice President for Business Development. In 2018, Alison became a Certified Professional Career Coach and founded Futurity to coach others through successful career transitions as someone who has ""walked the walk"". In this book, dozens of former intelligence, diplomatic, military and national security professionals share candid comments, valuable tips and sage advice. Considering a job change? Pondering a second career? Thinking about potential retirement? This is your guide!"

K. Dekleva 5.0 out of 5 stars Mandatory reading for all transitioning US government national security employees Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2020. This is a terrific and very helpful book, which I wish had been in publication whenI retired in 2016. It is chock-full of salient, practical advice about the financial, logistical, practical, emotional and social challenges of transition during retirement. Ms. Bouwmeester is a retired senior CIA officer, who has worked in the private sector and currently runs a coaching firm. Her book is both wise and nuanced. But its greatest strength and power lies in the 33 interviews with experienced, mostly senior-level employees who ave trodden this path. Their stories are both human and at times, quite compelling, revealing that senior rank and remarkable accomplishments do not shield those employees from the challenges portrayed therein. Overall, mandatory reading for any US government national security employee preparing for transition. Congratulations to Ms. Bouwmeester for her excellent book!
