AUTHOR: Graham Faiella has a deep and abiding interest in the lives of seafarers and ships, particularly of the deep-sea sailing ship era. He has personally sailed as crew on yachts, twice across the Atlantic, and on a 1750 tonne motor yacht around the world in 18 months (1973/74). He has sailed across the Atlantic twice. In 1973-74 he joined an eighteen-month voyage around the world on a 1,750-ton ex-hydrographic research ship. After graduating from Edinburgh University he became a professional editor and writer.
