Mirror of the Mind

Overview

Sometimes, you meet the person who changes your life at a bar, in a shop, or on the street. And sometimes, they jump out of your head. 1979, Oregon. Ethan Wells lives with his strictly religious mother in a remote mansion. And in his mind is another secluded place: Fantasy, where his Emotions take the form of characters from his favorite comic book. Love, one of Ethan's Emotions, has fallen head over heels for him. No amount of mockery and critique from her colleagues can dim her affections. But no power can bridge the dimensions standing between her and Ethan, impossible to cross. Still, Love was never one to stop dreaming. One night, she meets the memory of Ethan's late aunt Temperance, who shows her the Book of the Mind, which holds all the rules of Fantasy. Using the book's power, Love creates a path for herself and Temperance to the physical world. Dead set on ensuring her Happily Ever After, she adds another rule to prevent the other Emotions from thwarting her plans, bending Ethan to her will. Finally in the arms of her beloved, Love becomes a human woman named Jade, and Temperance comes back to life. And scraps of light illuminate Ethan's dark world. His mother suddenly loves him. He can go out by himself. The beliefs that dictated his life now seem absurd. But Jade soon discovers that being human is not as great as she thought, and that the Book of the Mind she had seemingly conquered may be more unpredictable than assumed. And maybe, on her path to true love, something followed-something forgotten ... Not in vain do people say that good intentions pave the road to hell. Gareth Brown's The Book of Doors meets Grady Hendrix's My Best Friend's Exorcism in this loose retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid that personifies human emotions like in Pixar Animation Studios' Inside Out.
