Reviews

The most accomplished literature in Spain for most of the twentieth century has been written in Catalan. Unfortunately, only a few happy readers outside Barcelona have heard about it. (Josep Miquel Sobrer, Indiana University) Carme Riera is one of the brightest stars in the glittering new constellation of Catalan women writers. Her complexly structured narratives, combining sharply ironic perspectives with evocative lyricism, have won critical acclaim in Spain. It is about time that her work should be made accessible to readers of English. (Susan Kirkpatrick, University of California, San Diego) Part detective novel, part political thriller, part M.C. Escher-like exercise in self-conscious writing, this intricate work highlights the writer's ambiguous stance of resistance and collaboration, self-denial and self-promotion. Cristina de la Torre's vital and sensitive translation makes it a must for anyone interested in the fate of the author and contemporary women's literature. (Agnes Moncy, Temple University)
