Overview

Suffering abuse, which untouchable Carrie James blames on her father, she teams up with criminal wannabe Kevin DJ Cash against the cartel responsible for the death of her close childhood friend. When Carrie, as the county's first female deputy, finds her father leads the cartel, she accepts an undercover assignment with the feds. Meanwhile Kevin infiltrates the produce company tasked by the county commissioner with smuggling sex workers across the border. He falls for a fellow probation officer with an appreciation for ska music and magic mushrooms. He's simultaneously mesmerized by the dangerously disturbed daughter of the produce company's owner. As an award-winning poet, songwriter, and novelist, Tony Burnett has had work published in over 40 international literary magazines including Connotation Press, Short Story America, Midwest Review, Gulf Coast, Crack the Spine, Equinox and others. He served as board president of the Writer's League of Texas beginning in 2011. He is now the managing editor and CEO of Kallisto Gaia Press. His publications include a short story collection, Southern Gentleman, a book of poetry titled The Reckless Hope of Scoundrels, and his most recent novel, Watermelon Tattoo, winner of the Water Tower Press Novel Prize. His next novel, Mirage, will release on March 10th of 2026. In addition to writing and publishing, he occasionally teaches writing workshops. He lives in rural central TX with his trophy wife of 32 years, Robin, where his hobbies include wandering aimlessly about, poking wasp nests with short sticks, and entertaining a pack of unruly Chihuahuas.
