Mr. Tompkins writes about how to structure and present an effective sermon. In addition to knowing the Bible, the deliverer must also be able to extract the essential message and prepare a sermon that the listener can relate to. He equates delivering the sermon to that of giving a sales pitch - once the critical point is made, close the deal. If a minister tries to present all of his knowledge during a sermon, some of those followers may tune out. However, he warns to not try and make the Bible fit the message, but rather let the message come from the Bible. Whether you are a new preacher, or a ministerial student or an experienced pastor, you sometimes look for a sermon idea, outline, illustration, poem or a bit of Bible trivia to make it interesting.
