OverviewThe focus of the work with the ministerials are legally unfree functionaries and rulers who both significantly shaped the social change that took place in the high Middle Ages and were also brought about by this change itself. They represent one of the most interesting social and legal phenomena of the Middle Ages. Well researched at the imperial level and in many other regions, they have so far not received the attention they deserve in the history of the Rhineland. Questions about the social mobility of the ministerials, their role in archbishop politics and the interactions between the requirements of the archbishop on the one hand and the independence efforts of the ministerials on the other are dealt with. The results of the work in no way only concern the Rhineland, but can claim supra-regional comparability through the connection and continuation of results achieved in other regions and in the Reich.
