OverviewFluorite forms in the cracks because around 200 million years ago super heated brine water containing the mineral fluorine was forced up from deep within the earth where it came into contact with calcium rich limestone bedrock and squeezed into the cracks where the crystals formed. He has fond memories of going through boxes of rocks that he had stored under his house, mostly from the same locations that Jim visits today. His interest in gems and minerals was rekindled by a tour of the SDMG Society's building. Jim joined the club and a year later became Field Trip Coordinator. Jim credits several members who had more experience in the field collecting with extending is knowledge. Jim studied Marine Biology and Business Administration as UCSB and USD and was a pitcher on the baseball team for both schools. He has owned and operated several different businesses, all related to the construction field. Currently, Jim is semi-retired and owns a business in Yuma, Arizona.
