OverviewThis book's author, Abdulla Farouk Hassan of the Maldives, visited the Minicoy Atoll in 1990. The information he collected during the trip forms the basis of this book. Minicoy (known in the Maldives and locally as Maliku) used to be the northernmost atoll of the Maldives. The atoll was seized by the Malabars several centuries back and became a part of India under British rule. (Maliku was renamed Minicoy by the British.) The information in the book will help Maldivians better understand Minicoy, which shares the same language, culture, food, and religion as the Maldives. However, we must still determine the circumstances that led to Minicoy separating from the Maldives. According to the written Maldivian history, Minicoy was not a part of the Maldives when Bodu Thakurufaanu waged his campaign to oust the Portuguese during the sixteenth century. During his fight against the Portuguese, he kept his family in Minicoy to prevent them from falling into the enemy's hands. He also found refuge in Minicoy on many occasions to escape the Portuguese. The Portuguese never attacked Bodu Thakurufaanu while he remained in Minicoy, which was likely under the Cannannore Ali Rajah's protection. Now, Minicoy is an Indian Union Territory administered as a part of Lakshadweep.
