They were established in the United States in the 1990s by breeding Satin rabbits with Mini Rex rabbits, making them a relatively recent breed. The American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) officially recognizes Mini Satin rabbits as a separate breed due to its distinct appearance and sociable nature. The short, dense, and glossy hair of Mini Satin rabbits is one of their most distinguishing characteristics. The breed gets its name from the satiny smoothness of its fur, which appears in a rainbow of hues, from black and blue to chocolate and beyond. The coat is low-maintenance, requiring only occasional brushing, unlike the fur of certain other long-haired rabbit breeds. Mini Satin rabbits range in size from small to medium, depending on the breeder, and always have a compact, well-muscled body.
