Minding Our Hearts: Devotionals on the Teaching Life for Christian Professors

Overview

This collection of 52 devotionals is designed for college or university professors, so all entries are connected to some aspect of faculty life: the classroom experience, research, or participation in the academic community. Readers will be challenged to think of new ways to live out their God-given calling in their teaching, research, and leadership lives. They will be invited to meditate on reflections from some of the most thoughtful and spiritually sensitive members of their profession, both youthful and seasoned. Also, readers will understand ways to become godly mentors for their students, to be salt and light in their collegial relationships, and to follow creatively redemptive projects in their research.

Reviews

""This fine collection of reflections on Christian spirituality in the context of academia gives voice to an impressively diverse group of professors from a variety of scholarly disciplines and churchly traditions. Their reflections provide insightful commentary and observations on the spiritual implications of the 'learning experience, ' a potential two-way street between faculty and students alike."" -Bill J. Leonard, Professor of Divinity Emeritus, Founding Dean, School of Divinity, Wake Forest University ""John Dunaway and I have been not-too-distant neighbors since I moved in 1987 from the University of California at Berkeley to the University of Georgia. Athens, Georgia is about 90 miles northeast of Macon, where John taught for his entire distinguished academic career at Mercer University. I knew John as the spokesman and unofficial leader of Christian faculty at Mercer. He would from time to time drive up to Athens to share insights with the Christian faculty group here. I strongly recommend his new book, Minding Our Hearts. The book is a collection of devotional vignettes written by Christian faculty from several universities. The authors I know personally include John, Russ Carlson, Phil Bishop, and Rae Mellichamp, all leaders on their campuses. The book is a long jump from Dunaway's usual intellectual writings on modern French religious writers, but the result is equally valuable and more approachable for nerd scientists like me. Bravo, John!"" -Henry F. Schaefer III, Graham Perdue Professor of Chemistry; Director, Center for Computational Quantum Chemistry, University of Georgia ""What a wonderful and needed volume for Christian professors. So often we exist untethered to a community of other believing scholars, often feeling like we are facing challenges alone. This book of devotionals, designed to provide one a week over the course of a year, will not only link you to other Christian professors but will also focus and refocus you in your calling, serving God through the life of the mind and heart. Be blessed!"" -Michael O. Emerson, Professor and Research Fellow in Religion and Public Policy, Baker Institute for Public Policy, Rice University
