Overview

Good dietary practices are a significant resource and an important aspect of life quality. However, changes in the socio-economic scenario, dietary pattern, lifestyle and technological advancements due to rapid modernization, have altered the health and the way of life among people. It has also favoured an increase in the occurrence of lifestyle-related degenerative metabolic disorders. Diabetes, a non-communicable major global illness has recorded third largest cause of mortality and it is becoming the 21st century's fastest rising health issue, due todeficit (in type I diabetes) insulin resistance or insulin insufficiency, characterized by additional pathogenic mechanisms, notably in type II diabetes (Kang et al., 2020; Dowarah and Singh, 2020 and IDF, 2019). Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic illness of concern since it leads to multiple complications (Mohamed et al., 2019 and Jayarajet al., 2020).Diabetes, particularly Type II Diabetic Mellitus, is no longer a disease of wealth but has become a burden for the entire society, affecting both affluent and poor people equally (Hasanet al., 2019). Over the last few decades, both the number of cases and the prevalence of diabetes have significantly increased (WHO, 2021). The prevalence of Type II diabetes is rising, which calls for more effective prevention and treatment strategies. (Khan et al., 2020).According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF-2019), the global prevalence of adult diabetes is approximately 463 million (9.3 percent) and is expected to increase to 578 million (10.2 percent) and 700 million (10.9 percent), by 2030 and 2045, respectively, with Type II diabetes alone accounting for approximately 90 percentof the total prevalence. It is vital to remember that more than half of persons with diabetes are ignorant of their illness, increasing their risk of major health problems.
