As an impressionable young man living in Las Vegas in the early 1970's, I was easily seduced by this unique city and its peculiar institution; wide-open gambling. I was living in a state where it was perfectly acceptable to answer the proverbial question of potential career choices with answers not available or acceptable in other states. Susie wants to be a chip hustler and Johnny wants to be a pit boss. Mary wants to be a baccarat shill and Eddy wants to be the eye in the sky. Betty wants to be a prostitute and Tommy wants to be a slot machine mechanic; I wanted to be a blackjack dealer. With the passage of time, the glamour of being a casino dealer began to fade. It became mundane, an unchallenging routine worn thin. The façade of fabulous Las Vegas, which had once dazzled me, had begun to crumble, to fall apart. I could see it lying before me in twisted and tangled heaps. I began to question the purpose and the validity of an industry sustaining itself by taking advantage of a gullible public. I took a moment to look beyond the bright neon lights of Las Vegas and just as Toto had pulled back the curtain to reveal the charlatan wizard, so did I pull back the curtain to reveal the reality of the gambling industry. It was a moment of revelation.
