OverviewThis book examines the alliance between religion and militancy as one response to the disruptions that globalised modernisation can bring about. From the mid 17th century onwards, China was racked by and nearly torn apart by revolts, nearly all of which drew upon religious inspirations as a series of holy campaigns to eradicate social/economic injustices and invidious foreign influences. These were not just peasant uprisings protesting the dislocations that ineffective government and foreign intrusions brought about. The Taiping Rebellion, arguably the most destructive in Chinese history, presented itself as a Christian war against infidels. The author argues that the ideological motivations behind these rebellions lie in the fascination with as well as revolution against the opportunities that globalised modernity provides.
