OverviewAt the center of this volume are multimodal analyzes of medical discussions with migrants. In particular, the comparison of conversations that have taken place with the help of professional or interpreting by family members makes it clear how complex the potential interaction modes and how different the forms of participation of patients are. Last but not least, the associated overworking of all those involved in the conversation becomes clear. It turns out that the concept of measures to ensure understanding does not offer sufficient solutions. Measures to promote understanding are necessary because, despite frequent linguistic procedures, security is often not guaranteed. The contributions in this volume work with the same interview data and related research questions. The combination of qualitative and quantifying statistical methods makes it possible to connect to the research traditions in medicine - an important aspect for the recognition and anchoring of research based on discourse analysis in this area.
