Overview

The battle of Midway was the turning point of the war in the Pacific. After a series of stunning victories, Japan's naval air arm received a stunning blow that saw the destruction of four aircraft carriers and the cream of her pilots. Ending in one action Japan's dream of controlling the Pacific and handing the naval initiative to the US Naval forces under the command of Admiral Chester Nimitz. Japanese Admiral Yamamoto sought to lure the remains of the US Pacific Fleet to their destruction around the Pacific atoll of Midway; however, American and British cryptanalysts had managed to break the main Japanese naval code and were able to give Nimitz a good idea of the Japanese movements, while the Japanese had also underestimated the ability of the US to repair the USS Yorktown in time to participate in the battle. In the end four Japanese carriers met three US carriers in the most decisive battle of the war in the Pacific. This title will take advantage of recent research into the battle to comprehensively update Osprey's previous Campaign title on the battle, computer-generated birds-eye views will be used to illustrate both the US and Japanese carrier attacks in exact detail to gibe a new angle on an ever-popular topic.
