Mickey Rooney: A Show Business Life

Overview

There have been several biographies of Mickey Rooney, including two autobiographies that focus primarily on his tumultuous personal life. In Mickey Rooney on Film and Television equal attention is finally paid to the staggering body of work this man created in a career that began as a child performer in vaudeville in the 1920's and stretched across the century to the CGI hit, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb released in 2015. There is a particular need for a book that chronicles Rooney's career because he either couldn't or wouldn't talk about his own work in any meaningful way no matter how hard interviewer's tried to get him to do so. It is perhaps understandable why biographers focused on the more sensational aspects of Rooney's life but his own books sound like a press agent wrote them. Mickey was a show business vagabond who went from one job to another and didn't seem to give much thought to the quality of the project or indeed his own work. I have interviewed several of the primary creative people who worked with Mickey on the Emmy Award winning, Bill for TV and his great performance in the classic film, The Black Stallion. They will speak for Mickey. Here at last is a book that cuts through his scandalous personal travails to focus on the work of an actor admired by Sir Laurence Olivier, Marlon Brando, Anthony Quinn, Gore Vidal, Tennessee Williams, and millions of film and TV fans.
