OverviewAu début de la Révolution, Michel-Jean Sedaine a 70 ans et a fait représenter une trentaine d'oeuvres de théâtre. On sait cependant peu de choses sur les dernières années de sa carrière, au cours desquelles le librettiste, membre de deux Académies, a également participé à la Société des auteurs dramatiques, mais a dû se défendre contre des accusations de modérantisme, voire de royalisme. Après une introduction qui replace sa carrière dans le contexte de la culture de la Révolution, ce recueil procure l'édition critique de deux livrets faits pour le compositeur André-Modeste Grétry: Raoul, Barbe-bleue (1789) et Guillaume Tell (1791, remanié sous la Terreur). Les mythes ainsi réactualisés (Barbe-bleue, dérivé de la Bibliothèque bleue; Guillaume Tell de l'histoire suisse) sont étudiés dans le contexte de la politique de l'époque, et les diverses sources sont confrontées pour étudier la genèse des oeuvres. Les enjeux éditoriaux que présente un recueil de livrets d'opéra-comique sont également étudiés. En outre le recueil tente, à partir de sources inédites ou peu connues, de reconstruire les autres projets fragmentaires entrepris par Sedaine au cours de cette période, jusqu'à sa mort en 1797, pour donner une vue d'ensemble de son théâtre pendant la Révolution.
