Metrophobia: An irrational fear of poetry

Overview

Do you fear poetry? Carolyn Martin's Metrophobia offers a delightful remedy. With humor, heart, and a sharp eye for everyday wonders, Martin writes poems that welcome rather than intimidate. From blessing a feral cat to reflecting on life at eighty, she invites readers to laugh, ponder, and feel seen. This collection is perfect for longtime poetry lovers and cautious newcomers alike. Martin proves that poetry doesn't have to be mysterious or lofty. It can be honest, accessible, and deeply human. With every poem, she reminds us that poetry is not something to fear. It is something to enjoy.

Carolyn Martin's journey has taken her from Roman Catholic nun and associate professor of English to international management trainer and award-winning poet. After publishing books and articles on generational diversity in the workplace, she returned to poetry in retirement and never looked back. Her work has appeared in more than 200 journals across North America, Europe, and Australia, and she is the author of several poetry collections, including Finding Compass, The Way a Woman Knows, and Splitting Open the World. In 2025, she received the Hudson-Fowler Prize for Poetry from Central Arkansas University. Carolyn lives in Clackamas, Oregon, where she writes, gardens, and plays with creative colleagues.
