Metaphysics & Psychiatry: Discoveries Through Insight, Healing, and Hope

Overview

This book addresses two worldviews that we ordinarily separate: metaphysics and mainstream psychiatric practice. The author's contention is that not only are these realms of thought complementary, but they can also be effectively combined during therapeutic treatment. The first part of the book defines the author's metaphysical model with its dimensions of inner consciousness. These spiritual dimensions exist at the behest of the soul to enhance insight across lifetimes. The second part of this book describes the author's pioneering techniques for metaphysical treatment, including techniques for achieving a therapeutic alliance with the patient by searching for life's spiritual relevance. Practices for relaxation, meditation, structured imagery, and chakra tuning are introduced. Case studies show how the metaphysical model can be used with standard diagnosis, as described in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The author of this book, Ralph J. Grasso M.D., is a psychiatrist with certification by American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and many years of successful clinical practice. Dr. Grasso describes his metaphysical model as the result of years of study, searching for answers to life's big questions--the why questions so often posed by his patients. The resulting model is an ongoing improvisation into the nature of spiritual truth, as separate from religious doctrine and observance. Dr. Grasso lives with his family in Boulder Colorado where he has learned meditate on sunlit mountain trails and to practice an eclectic version of clinical psychiatry.
