Metabolic Syndrome: Diagnosis and Management

Overview

Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors that increase the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Some of these risk factors of metabolic syndrome include excessive body fat around the waist, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, high blood glucose levels, and low HDL levels in the body. Obesity and fat deposits, specifically around the waist, are a major sign of metabolic syndrome. The diagnosis of metabolic syndrome can be done with the help of certain blood tests and other tests including high-density lipid (HDL) level less than 40 mg/dl in men or under 50 mg/dl in women, triglyceride level above 150 mg/dl and blood pressure level of 130/85 mm Hg or higher. The management of metabolic syndrome involves weight loss, exercise, and dietary changes. Some medications are prescribed to help control the levels of cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar. This book contains a detailed explanation with respect to diagnosis and management of metabolic syndrome. It presents researches and studies performed by experts across the globe. Students, researchers, experts and all associated with endocrinology and metabolic disorders will benefit alike from this book.
