Overview"This book examines the three 12th century mosaics at Cefalu, the Capella Palatina and Monreale, looking at their arrangement, liturgical and political significance. Executed within a 60-year span, the Norman royal mosaics form a statement of the monarchy's view of itself. Previous studies have concentrated on the style, iconography, date and condition of the mosaics, but their message has not been studied. The author adds the elements of imagery, medium, text and history which work together to deliver various messages in mosaic and examines the inscriptions that form part of the images, the arrangements of the cycles of images on the walls and domes, and the intentions and aspirations of their patrons. Eve Borsook has done extensive work on fresco and mural painting, and is the author of ""Mural Painters of Tuscany""."
