Valara spends a lot of her life trying to be small, obedient, and quiet, even though her light is not meant to be hidden. Valara has a strong connection with her brother, Caelen. He is the only one who never asked her to change. After a tragedy separates them, Valara ends up with the High Guardians, who believe that power should be controlled and not just felt. As Valara's magic changes and grows, so do her feelings of guilt and grief. She learns about what it takes to truly heal. ""Mend"" is about breaking apart and becoming whole again.
