OverviewIn 1940, Memphis, Tennessee was in a mess like many other cities. They were coming out of a depression, Prohibition and had many vices that were a detriment to an ideal city. Memphians were busy trying to make things better than they had been in the past ten years. Efforts were under way to clean up the city, make it a quiet city, and a safe city. Organized crime was a problem that was difficult to handle. Then WWII came. The country was fighting in Europe and Asia at the same time. Automobiles ceased to be manufactured. Replaced by war machinery like planes, LST's, ammunition. A significant amount of the male population had joined the war effort. This left the women to do the men's work. Women became riviters, welders building air planes, and even flying planes to the battle and returning to fly another plane to them. The Bordelos and Gambling houses were closed. Crime went down, the city got cleaner and quieter.
