OverviewExcerpt from Memoir of the Life of David Cox, Member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours: With Selections From His Correspondence, and Some Account of His Works It now remains for me to tender my sincere thanks for the kind assistance which has been rendered to me in the progress of this work, not only in the way of information and original letters, but also by the loan of drawings and paintings, the works of David Cox, to be copied by photography, and which appear in this volume. These illustrations, by the artist's own hand, of works painted by him at various dates, will, I trust, be regarded with especial interest by many who have no very ready means of access to the originals. To Mr. David Cox, junior, and to Mrs. William Roberts my grateful acknowledgments are peculiarly due; likewise to Mr. F. Craven, to Mr. H. T. Broadhurst, to Mr. Peter Allen, to Mr. S. Mayou, Mr. S. Quilter, and to Mr. Blacker, for the loan of valuable works. To Messrs. E. Everitt, W. S. Ellis, George Fripp, Alfred Fripp, G. P. Popkin, William Holmes, William Hall, Hollingsworth, B. A. Hallam, j. Banner, and Dr. Gibbs Blake, I am also indebted for various communica tions and assistance. As Bettws - y-coed is so peculiarly identified with the name of David Cox, I have added 'a chapter with that title, which I have devoted exclusively to a description of the place and its immediate neighbourhood, and to an account of the excursions he made there. Bettws was the scene of the Welsh Funeral, perhaps his most famous work. A photo graphic copy of this will be found at the beginning of this preface.
