OverviewMembrane separation is becoming increasingly important in a variety of processes and different applications. Among the contributions in this volume there is one describing developments in microfiltration membranes in applications where extremely high, or even total, removal efficiency of sub-micron particulate contamination is necessary. This is of particular importance in fermenter containment, beer filtration and the protection of electronic chip etching. Also discussed are the latest developments in membranes made from Nylon 66 and PVDF to control surface charge, protein absorption and hydrophobicity by surface modification, as well as composite membrane techniques to optimize removal ratings, flow/pressure drop characteristics and dirt holding capacities.
