The dangerous rise of anti-Semitism makes it urgent that the general public has a better appreciation of Jews and Judaism and their valuable contribution to a better world. This book begins with an overview of the Jewish world. and then focuses on the British scene. It describes and explains the differences of belief and practice within Orthodox Judaism and between Orthodox and Progressive Judaism. The reader is then invited to visit a Jewish Home and to learn about Sabbath observance, Kosher food and the ceremonies which mark different stages of life This is followed by a chapter on the role of the Synagogue as a house of prayer; .as a place of study; and the centre of community life.' The importance of Passover, Yom Kippur and other festivals and fast days is explained and this is followed by a guide to the vast body of Rabbinic studies as well as the writings of recent important Jewish scholars. One chapter reflects on the horror of the Holocaust (Shoah) and looks at the causes of it, the attempts rebuild Jewish faith and tells of the courage of those who rescued Jews. The history of Israel/Palestine is recounted; the different communities that live there are introduced. and efforts for peace are highlighted.. The book concludes on a hopeful note by highlighting the new friendship and co-operation of Jews and Christians, who after centuries of hostility, are now share a common mission 'to heal the world.' Marcus Braybrooke, an Anglican parish priest, has devoted much of his life to building good relations between the world religions. He was for a time Director of the British Council of Christians and Jews and is a co-Founder of the Faith and Belief Forum and Joint-President of the World Congress of Faiths.
