He is best known as the lyricist behind the song Jai Ho and for writing: Dhuan, Half a Rupee Stories, Kharashein, Autumn Moon and Kuchh Aur Nazmein. Gulzar won an Academy Award for Jai Ho which he provided the lyrics, sharing the award with A. R. Rehman. The song also won them A a Grammy Award.
