Medieval Architecture Revival in British Columbia

Overview

This book which you are now looking at is a cursory study of Medieval Revival Architecture as it was manifest first in England's two Crown Colonies: The Colony of British Columbia and The Crown Colony of Vancouver Island; and subsequently after Confederation, The Province of British Columbia. This architectural development followed the pattern of colonial settlement; along the Fraser River and to the southern tip of Vancouver Island. The architects of this region frequently punctuated the medieval design of their buildings with direct borrowings from Medieval Architecture. This is an aspect frequently overlooked in the scholarly studies of the Gothic Revival. The medieval open- timber roof, an aspect of the Gothic Revival has to date in Canada not received the recognitions in scholarly studies. A partial correction to this omission is undertaken in this book. The various typed of medieval open-timber roofs as they occur in the architecture of British Columbia are recorded both by text and diagram.
