Overview

As Iya-Ko-Naya and her Medicine-riding Sisters of Light fight a grueling, up-Mountain battle against Darkness, Shatwa Hei falls out of dreamtime and races across the spirit-haunted Flats to help defend the Daughter of the Mountain's safe-haven-seeking Little Sisters. In a valiant attempt to save Shatwa Hei from being slain by the Dark Ones, a gifted young Medicine-rider-Day-Star Black-Feather, the dark-Medicine-using blood-sister to Numo Black-Feather, Iya's Free-Range leader ex-husband-is sent to find the young apprentice warrior as he makes his way into the Spirit-haunted arena of that ancient conflict between light and Darkness. Under threat of death to both Day-Star and Shatwa Hei-as it is absolutely forbidden for an Outsider to travel to the Mountain of the Ancestors-Day-Star makes a bold, desert-rider decision to take the inexperienced Flatland-guardian, who has never before fought a real-time battle against a blood-scent-driven horde of Dark Ones, to the safety of the nearest of Dah'jeh-le-vah's safe-havens. What the two Medicine Seekers experience at the safe-haven confirms all their worst fears, which is that Outsiders are indeed unwelcome up-Mountain. Months after having lost all of his re-Awakened memories, Shatwa Hei discovers that very same Medicine-riding Sister-suffering the same untoward fate of forgetfulness that he has similarly experienced-beaten and abandoned by desert-riding scofflaws called drug-snakes, and left to die in the open desert. In a race against time, testing his own burgeoning skills as a down-Mountain warrior-brother, Shatwa Hei makes a dramatic, desert-guardian effort to save his Sister of Dark Medicine. As a result of his attempt, both he and O'hai-Ne'ah Black-Feather are given a second opportunity to re-Awaken not only their own ancient skills, but all the ancient memories that were lost as a consequence of the choices his Medicine-riding Sister made to save the Flatland guardian's life.
