OverviewAlthough rare, when medical emergencies occur in the dental setting they require a sound understanding of what action to take, to ensure that the emergency is dealt with quickly. Dental students and dental practitioners must be able to carry out first aid, including the principles of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and its practice. They should also be able to recognise and take appropriate action in situations such as anaphylactic reaction, hypoglycaemia, upper respiratory obstruction, cardiac arrest, fits, and haemorrhage. This essential, practical guide on how to diagnose and manage medical emergencies in dentistry covers the theory behind emergency management, in conjunction with practical tips and training so that all members of the dental team are able to deal with uncommon but potentially tragic events. Table of ContentsReviewsJust because a book is small, doesn't necessarily mean it is any less useful than a book 10 times its size. Indeed, in this particular instance, Medical Emergencies in Dentistry's size - a 150-page paperback that would easily fit into most pockets - is a positive advantage...dentists could keep this book on their persons, not necessarily at all times of course, but for when they suspect they might have some 'dead time' to fill productively. BDA News Vol 19, No 11 This small soft-covered book is a convenient pocket size, intended perhaps for hospital dentists to carry on their person in a white coat pocket as a ready reference in a medical emergency. It also provides practical advice and guidance for all members of the dental team when confronted by medical emergencies. Dental Practice With the increased expectation by the public that the dental team will be able to respond appropriately to emergency medical situations, as outlined as a duty of care in the General Dental Council's Standards for dental professionals, all members of the team need to feel confident that they can handle the basics of emergency medical treatment. This book is ideal for imparting such confidence.
