Author Information
Marie McGonagle is a former Head of the School of Law at the National University of Ireland, Galway.* She also served as a member of the University's Governing Authority. Her research interests lie in Media and Communications Law, and she has published widely in the field of national and international levels, as well as drafting many legal and policy documents, contributing to EU and Council of Europe programmes and studies, and advising Government and media organizations. She has held visiting academic appointments at Melbourne Law School; New York Law School; University of Poitiers, France; Programme in Comparative Media Law and Practice, University of Oxford; Institute for Information Law, University of Amsterdam; University of Maastricht, The Netherlands. E-mail: marie.mcgonagle@nuigalway.ie. Sharon McLaughlin, PhD, is a Law Lecturer in the Department of Law and Humanities at Letterkenny Institute of Technology, Ireland. Sharon's research focuses on communications law and policy. She was awarded her PhD from the School of Law at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) for her thesis, entitled 'The Protection of Children in the Online and New Audiovisual Services Environment'. She holds a BA in Public and Social Policy (2001), a LLB (2003) and a LLM in Public Law (2006). She is also a member of the EU Kids Online Ireland team. E-mail: sharon. mclaughlin@lyit.ie. Tarlach McGonagle, PhD, is a senior researcher/lecturer at the Institute for Information Law (IViR), University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He is also a senior researcher at the Netherlands Network for Human Rights Research and a member of the Euromedia Research Group. He specializes in and has published widely on a broad range of topics relating to international and European human rights law, media law and policy and journalism. He regularly does expert work for the Council of Europe and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. He was Rapporteur of the Council of Europe's committees of experts on protection of journalism and safety of journalists (2014-2015) and media pluralism and transparency of media ownership (2016-2017).
