OverviewThis Instructor's Manual is part of a broad-based multi-stakeholder initiative, Prevention through Design (PtD). This module has been developed for use by educators to disseminate the PtD concept and practice within the undergraduate engineering curricula. PtD anticipates and minimizes occupational safety and health hazards and risks at the design phase of products, considering workers through the entire life cycle from the construction workers to the users, maintenance staff, and, finally, the demolition team. The engineering profession has long recognized the importance of preventing occupational safety and health problems by designing out hazards. Industry leaders want to reduce costs by preventing negative safety and health consequences of poor designs. Thus, owners, designers, and trade contractors all have an interest in the final design. This manual is for one of four PtD education modules to increase awareness of construction hazards. The modules support undergraduate courses in civil and construction engineering. The four modules cover the following: 1) Reinforced concrete design, 2) Mechanical-electrical systems, 3) Structural steel design, 4) Architectural design and construction.
