Overview

The graphic novel explores themes such as identity, culture, diversity, censorship, and empowerment. McKenzie learns about different perspectives and experiences from the books she reads and tries to advocate for the importance of reading banned books. She also deals with racism, microaggressions, and discrimination from some of her teachers who mispronounce her name or dismiss her interests. The story conveys a message about the importance of reading books that challenge our assumptions and biases, and that represent the voices and stories of different groups of people. The purpose of the story is to inspire readers to seek out banned books and to speak up against injustice and oppression.
