OverviewTens of thousands of women die during pregnancy or while giving birth each year in the Western Pacific region, mostly preventable deaths. This research study reviews current policy and health care services for maternal health in Vietnam. It examines the key factors involved in maternal mortality rates and considers the role of community-based maternal death reviews (verbal autopsies), facility-based maternal death services, confidential enquiries into maternal deaths, surveys of severe morbidity (near misses) and clinical audits in obtaining accurate and timely data.
