How the Immune System Works: When the immune system detects a foreign invader, it initiates a cascade of events designed to destroy the invader. The first step is for the immune system to identify the invader. This is done by white blood cells called phagocytes, which engulf the invader and present it to other immune cells. Once the invader has been identified, the immune system launches a coordinated attack. The innate immune system plays a role in this attack by releasing chemicals that attract more immune cells to the site of infection. The adaptive immune system also plays a role by producing antibodies that bind to the invader and mark it for destruction.
