Overview

"The central pervasive feature of life on earth is the fact of the male and female sexes. For human beings with their capacity for reason, this is especially crucial, since they can work out the most appropriate pattern instead of - as with other creatures - merely letting nature take its course. With all the worthwhile human endeavor - philosophy, education, self- government, learning, metaphysics, roads, harbors, cities, environment, economy, arts, diplomacy, science, etc. - there is none as important, as how to arrange for the two sexes for the common good. Yet human beings in the West generally shun the task. Others have offered valuable insights and research over the years, and with their help this manuscript attempts to revive interest in the former wisdom - a workable balance of the sexes. Before the enlightenment and discovery of self, the West adhered to religion for higher precepts, seeing in God's rule a better guide than crude human contrivances. Since we are human, there were recurrent extremes to the right, which led to liberalism. But with the ""free"" thinkers, came license. Material gains relieved many societies from basic realities and gave vent to personal ambitions and acquisitions. Need for the former working arrangement between men and women became obscure, as women, like Charlotte and her web, now had the option of managing on their own more than in earlier times. Thus, came extremes of the left, tending to unravel civilization. For many, Charlotte is now ""equal"" and the hapless male an extraneity except as progenitor, though not yet suicidal. It is a free-for-all playground of personal indulgence, regardless of the over-all good. Every person for herself. In our supposedly educated country, show business and its liberal Fourth Estate have become Oracles and serious thought is scorned in most quarters. As a result, the modern West no longer understands the sexes nor do its citizens even try. Liberalism encourages all to live as liberalism or the government wishes, even unto ignorance. The strange idea of ""sex equality"" took hold to confuse the co-educated generations, now an androgynous mix. ""Educated"" men talk dutifully of ""gender equity"" despite baring of the female body far beyond equity. We are a bifurcated society in a schizophrenic culture, as many tout female pugilists, lawyers and doctors, while others produce children at will, though not enough. The basic inconsistency seems to escape the average male: As young women focus on ""careers,"" the general population-replacement rate lags behind third-world cultures. Yet, like it or not, the sexes remain the most important aspect of all public policy. This effort was originally put together during 1998, amounting to a survey of available literature at that time, with supplemental input since then. It is a halftime analysis, noting various forgotten precepts, along with current weaknesses and obvious corrections. It is nothing new - merely a reminder. There has been no real change in the parameters, only a loss of orientation. Introduction: Here, I sketch out why an up-date is needed, with a general overview of questionable practices and comments on why a people have and need a culture to begin with. One premise is that our past is important, thus I offer throughout the book ample authority from past and present substantiating a right order. Also, examples of current intellectual anomie, which are only representative, since the continuing paralysis is apparent daily in the media (As in reports of rape of midshipwomen at Annapolis despite pretense of ""sex equality."" In the ensuing furor, the age-old cause is ignored: for ""midships"" not to become maternity wards, females should not be midshipwomen.) Another premise is that the former stability has been upset by a misguided ideology -- feminism. The most important theme of this book is that in focusing on the female yin, we have inevitably caused the yang to atrophy, thus diminishing the value of manhood and distorting the whole pattern. Except for immediate concerns like self-defense or terrorism, men generally shirk their traditional job of thinking things out for the community."

Author Information

W. Edward Chynoweth is a third-generation West Point graduate reared in a family tradition of parents, sisters, aunts, uncles, and cousins all of whom were part of inter-war (1920s-30s) U.S. Army life. Before the turn of the century, his paternal grandfather spent seventeen years on the western frontier, as a lieutenant in the Seventeenth Infantry, during which time he commanded an Indian Scout troop. His maternal grandfather was an army surgeon. His father served 35 years, retiring as a Brigadier General. His command (the Visayan Force in the Philippines) was the last major force to surrender, in May, 1942. After eleven years, Chynoweth resigned his commission (Major, Res.) to enter civilian life, earning an M.S. at U.C. Berkeley, and a J.D. at Stanford. After stints in patent and civil practice, he served nine years as a deputy prosecutor, Tulare County, retiring in 1978. For ten years he followed a family tradition in art but in 1987 returned to his legal training and took up polemical writing following the Robert H. Bork nomination. A fruit grower for thirty-five years, Chynoweth lives on his ranch in the San Joaquin Valley. A lifelong affection for the opposite sex has led him to speak out against present fallacies masking ages-old patterns of manhood and womanhood. Egalitarian and meddlesome statutes have obscured natural parameters. This book offers a review of the literature, with commentary, criticism, and suggestions for recovering a truer norm.
