English summary: The social-role playing of courtly culture in the early modern period was based on the art of the mask. In the beginning of the 16th century a theory of ""uomo universlae"" (the ""universal man"") was formulated and an aesthetic of the (beautiful) appearance was implemented in political and social practices, which, is visible in the social reality through the wide-ranging culture of the mask, masquerade, and pretense. Literature, theater, music, and the pictorial arts reflected the mode of ""feint"" or ""as if,"" which was acted out playfully, and at the same time powerfully, in the mask and therein acknowledged the power of its art and, in the moral sense, as the instrument for disguise, deceit, and lies. This was true not only in the aristocratic courts but the art of the mask and disguise reached into all other social levels with great effect and became a pivotal element for a critical engagement with the courtly-absolutist society. Even those like Michel de Montaigne and the moralists of the 17th century, who abstained from courtly life, used the mask to formulate criticisms of the age of bourgeois enlightenment on a broad basis. In the mask, so the thesis of this book argues, the arts come to know themselves. The articles collected for this work throw a pronounced spotlight on the requirements and consequences of this tension-filled process into the 19th century. German description: Auf der Kunst der Maske basiert das soziale Rollenspiel der fruhneuzeitlichen hofischen Gesellschaft. Hier werden Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts eine Theorie des ""uomo universale"" formuliert und eine Asthetik des (schonen) Scheins in die politische und gesellschaftliche Praxis implementiert, die in der sozialen Realitat, in einer weitreichenden Kultur der Maske, Maskerade und Verstellung, sichtbar ist. Literatur, Theater, Musik und Bildkunste reflektieren den Seinsmodus des, als ob', der in der Maske spielerisch und zugleich machtvoll ausagiert wird, und erkennen darin ebenso die Wirkmacht ihrer Kunst wie auch - in der moralischen Auspragung - das Instrument fur Verstellung, Tauschung und Luge. Die nicht nur bei Hofe, aber dort mit der groaten Wirksamkeit sich auf alle anderen gesellschaftlichen Schichten ausbreitende Kunst der Maske und Verstellung wird zum Angelpunkt fur eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit der hofisch-absolutistischen Gesellschaft, wie sie etwa Michel de Montaigne, der sich vom Hof fernhielt, und die Moralistik des 17. Jahrhunderts formuliert sowie auf breiter Basis das Zeitalter der burgerlichen Aufklarung kritisiert haben. In der Maske, so lautet die These des Bandes, werden sich die Kunste ihrer selbst bewusst. Die hier versammelten Beitrage werfen prononcierte Schlaglichter auf die Voraussetzungen und Folgen dieses spannungsvollen Prozesses bis in das 19. Jahrhundert hinein.
