"The sources collected in this book are representative of Maryland's experience in the Civil War and a valuable guide for anyone interested in Maryland's heritage. Numerous historical works have been published in which the major battles in Maryland are remembered and studied, but the same may not be said of Maryland's people. Maryland contributed men to both sides of the war, but produced no Lee or Stuart, no Grant, Sherman or Sheridan.
