Pioneer Educator, Visionary Woman of Faith A woman of vision, courage, and faith-this is the story of Mother Mary Ann Aloysia Hardey, the first American daughter of the Society of the Sacred Heart. Born in Baltimore just before the War of 1812 and raised in Louisiana, she emerged as a pioneering Catholic educator and leader during a time of great upheaval-slavery, civil war, and westward expansion. Guided by deep prayer and unwavering conviction, she established 25 Sacred Heart schools across the United States, Canada, and Cuba, often traveling by wagon, train, and steamship to support them. Her extensive correspondence with Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat reveals a woman of insight, compassion, and remarkable leadership. Through her tireless work, Mother Hardey shaped the Society's mission in North America and left a powerful legacy-as the woman Barat proudly called her ""first American daughter.""

Ruth Marie Cunningham (1913-2005) was educated at Sacred Heart schools and entered the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1934, following her sister Frances. She served in many houses of the New York Province and later became a professor of English at Manhattanville College. After 1975, she lived at Kenwood in Albany, New York, dedicating herself to researching and writing about the Society's history. Born in New York, Ruth was deeply rooted in Sacred Heart traditions shared by her mother, aunts, and sisters. Carolyn Osiek, RSCJ, is Charles Fischer Catholic Professor of New Testament emerita at Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University and now provincial archivist for the Society of the Sacred Heart, United States-Canada Province.
