OverviewMartin Stanford Peters MBE, born on 8th November 1943, Plaistow, Essex, England, UK, was a footballer and manager. As a member of the England team which won the FIFA World Cup of 1966, Martin scored the 2nd goal of England's 4 in the final against West Germany, having also played in the World Cup finals of 1970 in Mexico. Peters played club football for West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Norwich City and Sheffield United, having briefly managed the latter before retiring from professional football during 1981. Martin was known as 'the complete midfielder, ' as he could pass the ball well with either foot, was good in the air and difficult to mark because of his good movement. A free kick specialist, he was described by England manager Sir Alf Ramsey, after a game against Scotland in 1968, as being 10 years ahead of his time . Peters was so versatile that while he was at West Ham he played in every position in the team, including goalkeeper in his third game, replacing an injured Brian Rhodes. Martin became Britain's first GBP200,000 footballer when transferred from West Ham United to Tottenham Hotspur during 1970.
