Reviews

Verified Purchase This book is an essential purchase for anyone who realises that human rights abuses can take place at home.Martin Foran was wrongly convicted largely due to doctored evidence presented by the notorious West Midlands Serious Crime Squad, in 1978 and after a few months of freedom, again in 1984. A whole sequence of beatings, harassment, followed . Damaging rumours were circulated. Martin's Irish background was used to falsely connect him to the IRA. Further rumours were circulated amongst Irish Republicans sympathisers that he was an informer. Martin continued to protest his innocence. He refused to give in and went on hunger strikes, a roof top protest, damaging his health in the process. Eventually he snapped and took a prison officer hostage to obtain medical treatment, leading to more beatings. On being released from prison in 1996, Martin continued to protest his innocence. His 1984 conviction was quashed in 2013, his 1978 conviction in 2014. It's always remembering that a prisoner who protests their innocence risks losing parole. All one can say to Martin's detractors is why would he deliberately risk longer in jail, and further separation from his family, put himself through so much, unless he was telling the truth ? But now with Martin's account for justice being published, it's vital that this book gets read and discussed. For Martin Foran, for his family and for all our freedoms.

Author Information

J. R. Stephenson is an author, businessman and broadcaster. On listening to Martin Foran's story he was convinced there had been a serious miscarriage of justice and felt the extent of fraud and corruption among the police and judiciary had to be exposed in the hope it might prevent the same mistakes being made again. He has written several books on crime and corruption, including the banking sector and writes thriller novels based on real incidents experienced during his business career. His broadcasting ranges from his weekly, 2-hour radio programme on current affairs to guest spots on the BBC and LBC. He also regularly comments on economics and business affairs on Aljazeera Television's global English network.
